Henning Larsen Architects is in the competition to design the new Trelleborg
A team led by Henning Larsen Architects has been selected as one of five consortia to develop an Experience and Knowledge Center for Trelleborg Fortress.
Henning Larsen Architects has teamed up with Kvorning Design & Communications, Rambøll and SLA Landscape in anticipation of creating the new Experience and Knowledge Center at Trelleborg, which will become a natural gathering point and destination goal of the highest architectural quality that invites both locals and tourists to explore and immerse themselves in the Viking fortress and its history.
Per Kristian Madsen, Director of the National Museum of Denmark, explained that “the Viking Fortress Trelleborg is one of Harald Bluetooth's chief ring fortresses and it deserves the finest visitor facilities for the dissemination of its history. My expectation is that the Viking Fortress at Trelleborg will be matched by some of the most excellent buildings that today's architects and exhibition designers can create.” Mr. Madsen was a member of the competition jury.
The team has been selected after a thorough assessment of references from similar projects and proposed key employees' skills. Henning Larsen Architects has many years of experience in creating new surroundings for historical collections. From the expansion of Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, where the museum's ancient art is framed by an intense interaction between the works and surrounding architecture, to the new Moesgaard Museum, inspired by archaeological sites where layers of history are gradually revealed. Moesgaard Museum has won numerous international architecture awards, including both an Architizer Award and Civic Trust Award.
No fewer than 51 Danish and International teams have applied to design the new Experience and Knowledge Center at Trelleborg. The five selected teams are now invited to prepare their final bids for the new Trelleborg. The winner will be announced January 29, 2016 and the new Center is expected to be complete during 2020.
