HOK has worked with LG Electronics USA and conservation groups to reach a “win-win” agreement on a new design for LG’s North American headquarters in New Jersey.

After exploring a range of options during 11 months of discussion, consensus has been reached on a new design that will create a sustainable building to benefit LG, the town of Englewood Cliffs and the state of New Jersey, while protecting the iconic vistas and integrity of the Palisades Park, a National Natural and Historic Landmark.

“We have found a solution that satisfies LG’s business needs and addresses concerns of our neighbors on both sides of the Hudson,” says William Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics USA. “The discussions were constructive, and parties on both sides showed a willingness to compromise, recognizing that there is a greater good to be acknowledged for the people, economy and environment of New Jersey.”

Reflecting compromises by all the parties, the design calls for a 5-story north wing just shy of 70 feet in height and a 3-story south wing, protecting the scenic views of the Palisades. LG will implement landscape, lighting and other design features to further reduce the visual impact while retaining the scale of the complex as home for LG’s growing US business.

“The new design integrates LG’s aspirations to build a world-class, sustainable headquarters in a park-like setting below the tree line of the historic Palisades,” says Ken Drucker, FAIA, design principal based in HOK’s New York office. “The viewshed from the Hudson River and New York will not be impacted and the surrounding area of the 27-acre site will be reforested.”

The plan maintains the design that aspires for LEED Platinum certification and includes protecting woodlands and six wetlands on the 27-acre site in Englewood Cliffs. The new 360,000-square-foot corporate campus at 111 Sylvan Ave. will allow LG to double its local employment to more than 1,000 by 2019 while creating thousands of New Jersey construction jobs in the shorter term.
