Distrito Castellana Norte and Arup presented an unprecedented urban development plan meant to regenerate a three million square metre area at the North of Madrid in the coming 20 years.

The performance area is currently occupied by large transport and hydraulic systems and obsolete industrial floors. Thanks to this regeneration, the project will create new infrastructure and services, strengthen the existing communities, include more than 566,000m2 of green spaces and a new major business area in the city. The development and its subsequent implementation is expected to create 12,000 jobs.

"We have planned a very people-focused development model, promoting social exchange and the interaction between neighbours. Castellana Norte will provide an identity to represent the values of Madrid as an open and high-quality city." said Flavio Tejada, Project Leader, Arup

This public-private project will keep 80% of the land for public use. While 25% of the land will be used for railway activity, 55% will be used for social infrastructure, urban services and green areas.

Arup has led the design and planning of this innovative urban development alongside an interdisciplinary team of 30 national and international consultants, and with the assistance of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The project is nurtured by similar successful experiences we have developed in cities like New York, London, Amsterdam and Bilbao.
