Warner Stand rebuild to begin in September
Construction of the new Lord's Warner Stand will begin in September 2015, it has been confirmed at MCC's Annual General Meeting. MCC Members voted overhelmingly in favour of the first phase of the Club's Masterplan for the redevelopment of Lord's.
The old Warner Stand will start to be demolished the day after the 2nd Royal London One Day International between England and Australia on Saturday 5 September 2015 and is set to be completed by April 2017.
Two tiers of seating will be operational during major matches in 2016 with the roof, a match-control Suite and a MCC Members’ restaurant fitted in time for project completion in April 2017.
The new Warner Stand's innovative design includes a semi-translucent fabric roof supported by a timber structure, which is the first of its kind in the country and will ensure the addition of another architectural landmark at Lord's.
The funding of this new 2,656 capacity Stand will come entirely from MCC’s existing cash reserves.
The structure will replace the current Warner Stand, which was built in 1958, and marks the first major phase of development in the Masterplan for Lord’s, which was unveiled in May 2013.
The stand was designed by architects Populous, whose designs include the new Wembley Stadium, Sydney's ANZ Stadium - home of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games - Dublin's Aviva Stadium and the retractable roof on Wimbledon's Centre Court.
Philip Johnson, Principal at Populous said: "We are delighted that MCC has approved the construction of the new Warner Stand. The project will deliver greatly improved viewing and facilities for both spectators and officials.
"The new stand includes a restaurant with unrivalled views over the famous ground, sheltered by a translucent fabric roof, the first of its kind, which is supported by cantilevered oak beams.
"Populous designs the places where people love to be together, including some of the most famous sporting venues across the globe. Lord’s has a special place in the hearts of cricketers and fans, and this new stand will help cement its position as the finest cricket ground in the world."
