Atkins appointed to three major electrification frameworks

Atkins’ rail business will deliver electrification design and engineering management services for three frameworks under Network Rail’s £2bn programme to electrify more than two thousand miles of railway across Britain.

Over the next seven years Atkins will work with main contractors ABC Electrification and the Carillion/Powerlines Joint Venture (JV) on the London North Western (South), East Midlands and Scotland regions of the framework.

Douglas McCormick, managing director of Atkins’ UK rail business said: “An electrified railway provides many benefits from smoother, quieter journeys for passengers to emitting less carbon than diesel. We look forward to working with ABC Electrification and the Carillion/Powerlines JV to deliver an exciting and challenging programme of work that will reduce journey times and improve network performance.”

Ben Dunlop, director of Atkins’ electrification business said: “These frameworks represent a significant piece of work and we are proud to be part of the team responsible for the biggest programme of railway electrification in a generation. This appointment recognises the investment that we are continuing to make in developing the skills and resources necessary to deliver technical excellence to the electrification programme.

“These framework wins build on our Lead Design Organisation contract for the Great Western Electrification Programme secured last year. Atkins will provide expertise in engineering, design and project management for a range of works from OLE, power supply, civils, route clearance and signalling immunisation. We will also support the construction, test and commissioning activities to bring the lines into service. With a fantastic portfolio of work to deliver across the programme, there are new openings available for talented designers, engineers and project delivery staff who want to be part of something big.”
