Capita Completes Kia Car Sculptures
Capita’s structural engineering team has completed work on a pair of ‘gateway’ sculptures for the KIA car plants in Seoul and Gwangju, South Korea.
The sculptures, which were designed by automotive sculptor Gerry Judah, are both 16m high and weigh 11.5 tonnes (not including the cars).
They use an extension of the steel monocoque construction technique Capita developed for the Lotus sculpture – also designed by Gerry Judah - at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This time the team used a ‘homography transformation’ to add a false perspective effect.
“Nobody else is doing this sort of stuff with this level of sophistication. We needed to define the geometry to the millimetre and supply all engineering calculations, finite element analysis, laser cutting files, jig and assembly drawings necessary to fabricate the pieces in South Korea without supervision. The timescale was very tight, the whole project took thirteen weeks from getting the client’s go-ahead to finished installation.”
