The project to build the Awash-Kombolcha-Hara Gebeya railway recently passed an important milestone with SYSTRA’s contribution: the first tunnel bored for a railway project in Ethiopia.

This new line will be an essential link in the future rail network between the North of the country and the major Addis-Djibouti axis. It will encourage the development of a thriving region, particularly around the towns of Dessie, Kombolcha, Shewa Robit and Hayq.

This 390 km railway line, serving 10 stations, will directly affect 36 million Ethiopians. It will enable them to travel from Awash to Hara Gebaya in under 4 hours 45 minutes, compared to 6h10 by road, in a country where private car ownership is limited to 10%. Freight transport should ultimately reach 17.5 million tons annually, some twenty trains per day.

The Awash-Kombolcha-Hara Gebeya project consists of single track, electrified standard gauge line, designed to carry mixed traffic. In addition to project management for this new 400 km railway line with Ethiopian Railways, SYSTRA is helping to develop the teams of Ethiopians who will operate the country’s future 2,000 km rail network. SYSTRA is currently working on the Detailed Design review for the project, after finalising the Basic Design review.
