The key ambition for the Bright Building was to create a highly sustainable, low energy building, combining inventive design, innovative materials with low embodied energy and low carbon technology.

The Bright Building features a number of sustainable design features including (but not limited to):

  • Natural ventilation
  • Reclaimed, recycled or natural materials used for internal fittings and finishes
  • Water saving fittings and rainwater harvesting systems
  • Low carbon technologies and efficient services including air source heat pumps, variable volume demand controlled ventilation, passive natural ventilation, solar thermal hot water generation, photovoltaic generation, dimmable lighting linked to day-lighting, presence / absence detection, T5 fluorescent and LED luminaries.

Building Performance

The Bright Building was awarded a BREEAM Outstanding rating of 95.2%, the highest rating achieved in the education sector. The building is also aiming for a platinum LEED accreditation - an internationally recognised green building certification system, which is used extensively throughout the US and Europe and has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of 'A'.

The University of Bradford continues to push their agenda to create a low carbon campus. This exemplar sustainable building is a new build facility located in the centre of the campus. It is not only a central focal point within the university’s master plan, but is one of the most sustainable new buildings in the country demonstrating the universities Ecoversity commitment.

A key part of the brief was to create a building which could be used as an educational tool to showcase and inspire sustainable construction.
