Sabadell, smart city reduces its energy consumption with innovative lighting solution
“Despite unfavourable economic conditions, we can continue to take important actions that transform and modernise public spaces. You only need to find the appropriate technologies and procedures, relying on a combination of efficiency, improving the quality of public spaces and concern for the environment. Efficiency is an element that the crisis has forced us to incorporate, and the new lighting system perfectly satisfies this criteria”. Joan Carles Sánchez - Mayor of Sabadell
The city of Sabadell, outside Barcelona, has always pursued economic growth and social progress with innovation. With its “Sabadell, Smart City” strategy, the local authorities aim to transform urban management and be environmentally and economically exemplary by taking advantage of innovative technological developments. The city was a finalist in the 2013 Smart City Award with its forward thinking initiatives.
As part of this strategy, the city of Sabadell chose Schréder to replace more than 7,500 luminaires with LED fixtures, which currently represent 29% of the overall public lighting scheme. The LED luminaires are equipped with control systems to improve the quality of lighting in the public space while cutting energy and maintenance costs and reducing CO2 emissions.
“LED lighting represents very substantial savings and has enabled us to cut 30% on our overall bill for outdoor lighting. It provides the correct lighting levels with better visibility at night and optimal colour rendition to show the real colours of the city” explains Cristian Sánchez, Councillor for Public Spaces and Delegate of the "Sabadell, Smart City” programme. “It also has a strong environmental impact with more than 800 tonnes of reduced CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent to taking 545 cars or 108 trucks off the road per year."
The city broke new ground by using ESE - an ESCO (Energy Services Company) to finance the lighting. The technical team of the city council then tested a series of luminaires in an independent laboratory to ensure that the new lighting scheme would provide the right light levels with high performance in terms of energy savings, lifetime, reliability and photometrical performance. The council was particularly attentive to luminaires that would also eliminate uplight, so reducing the city’s light pollution. The Schréder LED luminaires amply met all the technical requirements, providing the best photometrical results with minimum power consumption.
The Teceo, with its superior performance, was chosen to light the main avenues and streets while the Kio LED lights the parks, squares and pedestrian areas, providing safe and welcoming environments with high visual comfort.
The Neos LED provides a bright white LED to guide drivers safely through the city’s tunnels.
All of the luminaires are equipped with a control system to optimise energy consumption throughout the night.
The council is delighted with the results of this new lighting scheme and is already looking to implement the second phase of this project. As Joan Carles Sánchez, Mayor of Sabadell explains “The new LED lighting is part of the municipal programme “Sabadell, Smart City”, which promotes innovation in the city. Innovation to build a more efficient, environmentally friendly city with a better quality of life for the citizens of Sabadell.”
